Small Plane Crash-Lands on Powers Boulevard in Colorado Springs; All Three On Board Uninjured

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – A terrifying moment unfolded in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2025 when a small, single-engine aircraft (Piper Cherokee) made an emergency landing on a major road in northeast Colorado Springs. The crash was reported at approximately 4:15 a.m. on southbound Powers Boulevard, just north of Barnes Road.

Remarkably, all three individuals on board the aircraft survived without injury, and no one on the ground was hurt.”There’s probably three individuals who were on that plane who had some very intense moments and are feeling very lucky this morning,” said Colorado Springs Police Department (CSPD) spokesperson Ira Cronin.Details of the Emergency Landing

The aircraft involved was identified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) as a Piper PA-28, which is registered to Allison Aviation LLC, based in Pueblo. The flight originated from the Colorado Springs Airport. The pilot issued a “Mayday” call after reporting trouble five minutes after takeoff. Aviation safety analysts noted that the problem occurred almost immediately after liftoff, preventing the plane from gaining significant altitude. Flight data indicated the aircraft only reached an altitude of about 500 feet above the ground. An aviation expert suggested the pilot’s decision to land on the heavily trafficked road was likely the safest choice, given the dark, predawn conditions. Powers Boulevard provided the necessary visual reference for a landing on a hard, relatively open surface. The CSPD confirmed that the plane struck a couple of power poles during the emergency landing.Response and Investigation

The crash triggered an immediate response from the Colorado Springs Fire Department (CSFD) and CSPD. Fire crews quickly worked to contain a fuel leak coming from the damaged plane which had landed on the west side of the southbound lanes. The incident caused significant disruption to the morning commute as two lanes of southbound Powers Boulevard were closed for several hours while emergency crews worked to clear the scene and a tow truck removed the wreckage later in the day.The FAA is currently investigating the cause of the mechanical failure that led to the emergency landing. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has also been notified.Do you need more information about the plane’s flight path, or would you like to know more about the investigation process?
