The Final Turn: A Deadly Aerodynamic Trap

In aviation, few moments are as potentially treacherous as the transition from base to final approach with the exception of the “red zone” (what I call it) before I make it to 800 ft AGL and can’t safely teardrop back to the runway. I covered this in another article “Avoiding the Impossible Turn” HERE. Despite years of training and safety protocols this critical phase of flight continues to claim lives due to a persistent and deadly mistake loss of airspeed (energy management) improper turn management and one of the 5 hazardous attitudes being “macho”, in other worlds, “I’m so skilled I can still make it just fine” when it’s unsafe to do so.

The Anatomy of a Dangerous Scenario

The base to final turn represents a high risk moment for pilots particularly those flying smaller aircraft. As pilots approach the runway they often make a critical error they rush the turn while simultaneously reducing power and losing critical airspeed. This combination creates a perfect storm for an aerodynamic catastrophe. The turn is usually rushed due to starting the turn too late because of loosing view of the field and needing to make sharp corrections to get one line with the runway.

Understanding the Stall Mechanism

During this turn pilots frequently make two fundamental mistakes:

  1. Excessive bank angle
  2. Insufficient airspeed maintenance

As the aircraft bank more lift is required to maintain altitude. If the pilot doesn’t simultaneously increase angle of attack or maintain appropriate power the aircraft’s wing can no longer generate enough lift. The result is a sudden and potentially fatal stall.

Statistical Realities

Accident reports consistently show that base-to-final turn stalls account for a significant percentage of fatal general aviation accidents. These incidents often occur within 500 feet of the ground, leaving virtually no room for recovery.

Prevention Strategies

I hate to overwhelm and I’m not a CFI but this is my opinion on how to avoid this deadly mistake.

  • Bank angles and airspeeds: Make a promise with yourself on airspeeds and bank angles. my planes POH will provide max bank angle and airspeed calculation. Although my POH pays I can have a 40 degree bank angle at gross a 75 kts I limit myself to 30 degrees and 75kts on base to final turns.
  • Go Around: You likely don’t do enough go arounds anyway so use this as practice. If I’m at 30 degree bank and I come out way far left or right of the runway to where it’s not a slight correction I’m continuing my turn to get in line with the runway but overflying at a couple hundred feet and going around. Because I’m not rushing to get aligned anymore or trying to decent at the same time, the presure is off and you can setup better the next time around.
  • Using smooth, coordinated control inputs: nobody likes a hard jerky turn so don’t do them, no normal landing needs a harsh approach, if you are making turns with heavy Gs involved, it’s not the right approach to land this time. go around.
  • Practicing stall recognition and recovery: If you did the other things in this list you should never need this skill but practice anyway. Go do stalls at 4500 AGL so you ingrain the power up, flaps retracted and trimmed out recovery for approach stalls.

Remember: In aviation, rushing is never an option. Smooth is safe with ample planning and practice.
